John Pawson
Michael Hue-Williams Gallery
Michael Hue-Williams
London 1996

Located on the upper level of a shared commercial building, the gallery is the product of tightly organised plan that accommodates all the elements specified in the brief - gallery, storage and office - without any sense of crowding, or compromise. Windows in the front and back walls form the principal organisational element.

Visitors are admitted by means of a communal staircase and reach the gallery - a cube within a cube - after first encountering the reception area, library and office, these secondary spaces providing a buffer between the outside world and the art within. A shop window at street level on the opposite side of the road provides a changing showcase for art.
