John Pawson
Calvin Klein Store
Calvin Klein Inc
Tokyo 1994

The first realised Pawson scheme for Calvin Klein, the Tokyo store occupies a substantial commercial structure in the heart of the city’s fashion district. Interior and exterior belong to different worlds, the entrance acting as a decompression chamber which filters out the visual chaos which is contemporary Japan and prepares for passage into the calm white heart of the store.  The extensive use of stone and natural light creates an environment of quiet luxury in which the clothes become the natural focus of attention.
