5 Objects
John Pawson for When Objects Work
2001
When
Objects Work’s inaugural ‘5 Objects’ launched in Milan in 2001. Each of
the five pieces is a container of some sort – bowl, tray, vase, picture
frame and candleholder. All are based on a graphic geometric form –
circle, square, rectangle, cylinder and hemisphere – and explore the
interface between contrasting materials. In the case of the bowl, the
second material is entirely invisible but no less fundamental, being
the sand which moves freely within the double-skinned bronze
hemisphere, effectively internalising the function of a base and
allowing the bowl to sit in any position on a surface.
